Here at PBJ we are counting down the days until Christmas, our favorite time of year! The stores are filled with decorations, holiday music, and great sales… What could be better?Today we decided to start brainstorming some things that we would love to pull out of our stockings on Christmas morning. Check out what we came up with below.

Untitled

1. Soap and Glory Hand Food – Sephora
This is some of the best hand lotion out there. It leaves your hands super soft, is non-greasy, and has a hint of marshmallow so the smell is amazing!

2. Tribal Pattern Metal Drop Pierced Earrings – Purple Box Jewelry
These earrings are fun for the holidays because they are big but the tribal pattern make them stylish enough to wear all year long.

3. Peppermint Hot Cocoa – Ghirardelli
Winter is the perfect time for a mug of hot cocoa and what better way to celebrate the holidays than with Ghirardelli? Make it peppermint for a festive twist.

4. Mint Julips Lip Scrub – Lush
The winter months can leave your lips chapped and dry, especially around here where our winters get bitter cold. This lip scrub from Lush is made with sugar so it wont irritate your lips and the jojoba oil leaves them silky smooth.

5. Knit Texting Gloves – Purple Box Jewelry
With smart phones on the rise, texting gloves make a great gift! Again since it is so cold here (We’re Minnesotan… of course we are going to reference the weather at least twice), being able to use a touch screen without freezing your fingers off is a big bonus!

The next few items are for the men out there. We have to give you some stocking stuffer love too!!

6. Poker Chips – Amazon
This isn’t really gender specific, because girls can rock the Texas Hold’em too, but what guy wouldn’t love some shiny new chips?

7. Beef Jerky – Jack Links
Again not gender specific but guys love snacks more than lip gloss so there you go.

8. Whistle Creek Survival Kit in a Sardine Can – Amazon
For the hunter, fisher, or camper in your life. It will fit in his stocking which means it will fit in his pocket and they say it has, “Emergency medical supplies, nourishment, navigational aids & more!”

What are your go to stocking stuffers? Remember you have 42 days to figure it out!!

Before we even get into the logistics of this week’s Throwback Thursday, let me just apologize for dropping the ball on posting. I could start listing excuses but things have been busy around the PBJ office so we will just leave it at that!

This week for TBT we are paying tribute to the Empress of Soul herself, Gladys Knight. Born in 1944, Knight got her start at fame at the age of 7 when she won an amateur hour contest that aired on TV. From there she took the performing bull by the horns and became one of the biggest names in Motown. She has won four Grammy awards as a solo artist and three with her group Gladys Knight and the Pips. Since the Motown days she has done of bit of acting, but her true love is her music, and she has a knew album set to release sometime in 2014!

Gladys Knight & The Pips

The above picture shows Knight with the Pips; we love how adorable she is! She starts her outfit off with a fun colored jacket, adds some big earrings and a chunky bracelet and she is good to go. Fall is the perfect time to experiment with deep colors. Jackets can easily dress down any outfit for a casual autumn feel. Knight opted for natural makeup and simple hair making this outfit effortless.

We chose an oxblood leather jacket for our recreation of this look. Leather, vegan leather or “pleather”, whichever floats your boat, is all over in stores this season, and we love it, too! Pair the jacket with basic black skinnys and statement accessory pieces like Knight and you will be looking so good people will be talking about you “through the grapevine!”

Welcome back to Throwback Thursday! This week we went all the way over the pond for our inspiration. PBJ is going British and turning Maggie Smith for some fashion advice. Born in Essex in 1934, Smith by the age of 16 she knew she wanted to be an actress, dropped out of high school, and began studying acting at the Oxford Playhouse. Smith has been in countless theater productions, television shows, and movies over the years. She is best known for her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter movies, and as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham in the Masterpiece Classic Downton Abbey; she has won a Golden Globe and two Emmy’s for this role.

We love the above picture because it shows Smith in all her glory. The large fur scarf and hat makes for a cozy fall look and the eye shadow and earrings give just enough bling to make this warming look glamorous. Now that the weather is getting colder here, we have fall on the brain and this look is perfect for that! This look would look great dressed up for an event or dressed down with a pair of jeans. Either way, Smith nailed it.

We decided to go with browns and tans for a more fall friendly look and thought that it would pair well with some green eye shadow. A copy cat of this look is enough to make a wizard drop his wand. 🙂

This week, PBJ has chosen a look a little more wild and funky for Throwback Thursday. Janis Joplin is our go to girl. Born in 1943 in Texas, Joplin is a singer-songwriter best known for her growly voice. Between the years of 1962 and 1970 she stunned the music world with blues rock, soul, psychedelic rock, acid rock, country, folk, hard rock, and jazz blues. Her fans called her performances electric and she was one of the main attractions at Woodstock. Joplin released many high ranking songs, but her most well known are Piece of My Heart and her number one hit, Me and Bobby McGee. Clearly she had quite a career and we love her look just as much as her music.

Janis Joplin

The above picture may be one of the most popular out there of Joplin, and we love it. It captures her carefree personality to a T and her ability to accessories is spot on. She takes it about as far as you can go without being over the top and she looks great doing it. Chunky necklaces, extreme bracelet stacking, and retro sunglasses make for an effortless look that is perfect for the end of summer.

Below are some things we found to get this psychedelic look. Often pictured with a cigarette in her hand, we added some old school candy cigarettes to our must have list. We suggest these instead of actual cigarettes so that you can truly capture the essence that is Joplin without actually smoking! PBJ gives a thumbs up for that!

Throwback Thursday Friday

Before we get too far into this week’s Throwback, we have to apologize for being a day late! The PBJ office has been a bit chaotic with the four day work week. On that note, here is our belated Throwback Thursday, or to keep with the catchy phrases, we’ll call it Flashback Friday! The list of the stars competing on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars was revealed this week and one star in particular caught our attention. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 and was given a gruesome prognosis; as little as 3 months to live. 4 years later, not only is she alive, well, and coming close to remission, she is also about to cut a rug in front of millions. In honor of her latest career move, we have chosen Valerie Harper for our Flashback Friday fashion inspiration.

Harper made a name for herself by staring in the classic sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show as Mary’s best friend Rhoda. After Mary Tyler Moore, she was in a spin off show entitled Rhoda and was reunited with Moore in Mary and Rhoda, a made for TV movie. She has held roles in many other shows and even holds a few Emmys and Golden Globes under her belt. Straight from the 70’s, Harper’s style was “groovy!”

Valerie Harper

The picture above is a perfect candidate for Throwback Thursday Flashback Friday because it is full of accessories! The first thing we noticed: the head scarf. We love it! It is difficult to find a picture of Harper from back in the day without a head scarf. She pairs her statement head-wear with a chunky necklace, a bit of bracelet stacking and a killer purse. This outfit screams 70’s and we adore every bit of it!

Here is what we found to create our 2013 version of Harper’s Rhoda days.

This week, PBJ is honoring one of America’s sweethearts for Throwback Thursday. Dorothy Hamill is a Chicago native who took home her first national figure skating title at the young age of 12. She made the 1976 US Olympic Figure Skating Team and won gold in the woman’s singles. As if a gold medal wasn’t enough, her career following the Olympics has been quite impressive. She has published two autobiographies, has been in Broadway on Ice, was a mentor for young figure skaters, and traded in her blades for heels on Dancing with the Stars. Hamill is also a breast cancer survivor. Her style and grace is flawless both on and off the ice. We think she is someone to cheer about!

dorothy hamill

We chose the above photo of Hamill for inspiration because not only does she look flawless, she is also stacking bracelets. Everyone knows that PBJ loves stacking bracelets! A simple dress with a fun bodice is always a great choice. Hamill pairs her dress and top notch bracelet stacking with fun earrings, effortless hair and barbie pink lips. We love it all!

Below are great pieces we found to duplicate Hamill’s look.

paircolors

Labor Day is just around the corner and that can only mean one thing: summer is coming to an end and fall is in the air. What better way to transition from one season to the next than some bold and fun color pairing! Below we show you some of PBJ’s favorite color combos fashion gurus from near and far are loving. We will show you how to read the color wheel with the eyes of a fashionista and how to add some pop to those basic neutrals you have floating around in your closet!

Scarf Color Wheel

The picture above shows a color wheel we found super helpful in pairing colors. The rule of the color wheel that leads to excellent outfits is the complementary color rule. It sounds like it’s a science but it is really quite simple. Complementary colors are those that are found directly across from each other on the color wheel. The best part about complementary colors is  you can pair a summery color with a fall color and be set for this in between time of year! Go ahead and print a color wheel picture and hang it by your closet as a reminder… we aren’t judging.

—————————————————————–

navycoral

Our first pair of complementary colors are navy and coral. We absolutely love this combo because it makes for good use of our new Opaque Coral Facet Bead Necklace and Earring Set. The navy shirt complements this necklace well and the combo of colors is still bright without being too much for the fall season.

—————————————————————–
violetmustard

Our second set of complementary colors are violet and mustard. Again, these colors are across from each other on the color wheel. Violet is a great summer color and mustard is a classic fall choice. Since the basic tee and the Solid Color Soft Weave Scarf are both very simple pieces, we added a pattered skirt to spice up the look. Pair this outfit with some classic black accents and you’re good to go!

—————————————————————–

Now for our neutrals. We all have them: white, black, grays, and browns are those colors that don’t fall on the color wheel… so what do you do with them? They really can be worn with anything, but we have one rule we love to follow. Pair your neutrals with a vibrant or very bold color; and by vibrant and very bold we mean something you probably would not wear a second color with. Below are colors that we are calling “It Colors” for Fall 2013.
emeraldnude

The first color is Emerald. Pantone chose Emerald at their Color of the Year for 2013. We love emerald because it looks good on anyone; dark hair, light hair, and any skin tone. We suggest pairing emerald with nude because it’s classy and gives a very crisp and proper look. The patent leather accessories are great in keeping with the “on the fancy side” look. The Gold Texture Collar Necklace goes well with both the neckline of the dress and the gold accents on the purse.

—————————————————————–

graymint

As mentioned in our Color Trend Blog, Mint is a go to color. Grey is one of those colors people tend to stay away from because it is “blah” and “boring”, but not if you pair it with something bright and fun! We love mint and grey together because it is lighter than black and almost all pastel colors really stand out against grey. Our Soft Color Infinity Jersey Scarf adds a pop of color and ups the comfort factor to this casual look.

—————————————————————–

oxbloodblack

The last color that we love for this upcoming fall season is Oxblood. It’s bold, rich, and just screams Autumn. Oxblood and Black is such a great combo because it makes a statement without being too flashy and over the top. This look can be worn now and all the way to the new year. We paired this oxblood sweater with our Large Cluster Stone Pin and our Black with Color Edge Strap Watch in Black. It’s simple, but bold: just what we like.

Go take a fashion risk and start pairing colors!

Breaking news! This week’s Throwback Thursday is dedicated to a stunner. Barbara Walters (or, more affectionately known in the PBJ office as Babs) had quite an eye for style in her day. Walters is a face and name known by many, but it wasn’t until the age of 40 that she found herself on “The Today Show” writing and producing a Women’s Interest Stories segment. It was then her natural interview skills were discovered. Let’s be honest, at the age of 83 she can still interview like no other. After proving herself as a star anchor, she was then given more air time and eventually was the first woman to ever be known as a “co-host.” Way to go, Babs!!! She recently announced that in May of 2014 she will be retiring from ABC News and “The View,” but she hit the fashion nail on the head for those 52 years without a doubt.

Young Barbara Walters

The above photo really caught our attention. Not only was it almost unrecognizable, but the outfit is a classy look still in style to this day. A basic high neckline dress is a timeless go-to for any occasion from business casual to formal. Walters paired it with a statement necklace that really adds to the plain dress. Pair those with a simple bracelet and some teased hair and she is good to go.

Here is an updated and more colorful way to dress like Babs.

This week’s Throwback Thursday is one of PBJ’s favorites; Dolly Parton! What a lot of people don’t know, is that Parton actually started her career as a child. Born and raised in the countryside of Tennessee, she released her first song at the young age of 13. As an adult, she became a a country-pop phenomenon with chart topping hits like “9-5” and her duet “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers. Parton has also composed songs that have been sung by both her and others. Possibly the most famous would be “I Will Always Love You” which was a two time platinum record. It broke records when Parton released it as well as when Whitney Houston re-recorded it. Dolly Parton is in her late 60’s today but she still looks fabulous!

Our inspiration photo this week is a older shot of Parton and she looks as stunning as usual. She rocks a denim shirt in this picture and that look has definitely made a comeback. Her blonde locks are in a league of their own, but she tames them well with an embellished headband. She threw on some hoops earrings and finished off with a swipe of eyeliner. This look is clean, simple, and timeless.

Here are some things we found to “Dolly” up your outfit.

Women’s Classic Chambray Shirts – Old Navy
Striped Bow Headband – Forever 21
Long Lasting 12HR Wear Eye Liner – Sephora
Drop Pierced Earrings – Purple Box Jewelry

Turning to Dolly Parton for style ideas will having you looking great from “9-5” and all the way to Dollywood!

August is officially in full swing and that means that the end of summer is getting closer. Now if the time to start taking advantage of wearing summer colors before Labor Day hits and our wardrobes shift into fall mode. This month, mint green is making a splash and has been declared the “go to color of August 2013.” Mint green is a great color for August because it transitions well. Pair it with white for a summery look or with blacks and grays for a more subtle pop of color that could be worn into the fall months.

From PBJ, try our Solid Color Infinity Jersey Knit Scarf in mint green (pictured upper middle), or our Starfish Collar Necklace and Earring Set (pictured lower left).

By adding some of this trending color to your wardrobe this month your style will leave you looking “mint condition!”
